Searching Vessels

You may be called upon to search a vessel for explosives as a preventive measure, but you may also be searching after a bomb threat. In the face of a specific threat, you might know the name of a specific ship or only its destination.

Figure 6.12 While searching this ship, explosive detector dogs found a chest with arms.

Ships are vulnerable to explosive or incendiary devices in a variety of places:

• In passenger cars, freight vehicles, or coaches

• In misdeclared cargo—keep cargo distribution papers handy

• Carried on board by current passengers, or those from a previous sailing leaving a timed device

• In luggage placed in a baggage trolley

• In the ship’s stores

• In the post

• Carried on board by shore workers in port or by contractor’s personnel
